How to Store Moon Water

Now that you have made your moon water, it is time to store it. The method for storing your moon water will depend on if you added any extra ingredients to it when you were finished. We are going to cover the basic moon water storage, and then talk about some alternate storage methods for added ingredients. Keep reading to discover the best storage method for your moon water!

You need a clean container.

First, the container you store your moon water in should be clean both physically and magickally. Be sure there is no residual food, dirt, or debris in the jar, bowl, or other storage container. Many witches choose to store their moon water in a glass jar, but plastic or another form is okay to use as long as it is water-safe.

You may also want to cleanse your container. This might be the right choice for you if the container was used for something previously or has been stored away for a while. Cleansing the container you choose to use will ensure that no negativity or stray energy is stored inside the container where you will place your moon water.

Keep it away from sunlight.

Many people choose to store their moon water away from direct sunlight, believing that exposing it to the sun’s rays will reduce the potency of the moon’s charge. However, this is simply a matter of personal belief. Many people have no problem leaving their moon water out in the open, believing that it is the intent that makes the magick work. If there is no intent for the sun to interfere, then the sun will not interfere.

Some people even argue that direct sunlight is beneficial for the water, as it helps to elevate the energy associated with the moon. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how you want to store your moon water and if you believe that sunlight will have an effect on it.

Make sure there is a label.

You may want to label your moon water with the date of the moon, the moon phase, and any astrological significance that is important to you. This may be especially important if you make moon water on more than one occasion or you have more than one jar of moon water at a time. It would benefit you to create labels so you do not confuse the moon waters when you need them.

It would not be wise to use a moon water you created for abundance in a protection ritual. This is where labels come in handy. Knowing which jar contains what moon water will help prevent you from making small mistakes in your spellwork.

Added Ingredients

Many witches like to add a variety of ingredients to their moon water, such as herbs, oils, and crystals, to give it added benefits and correspondences. Depending on the type of ingredient, different storage methods may be necessary in order to ensure the potency and integrity of the moon water.

For instance, moon water with dry herbs will be stored differently than moon water with fresh herbs. Moon water mixed with oils will need extra ingredients and a dark place, while moon water with crystals requires extra research and potential time limits. By taking into account the various storage methods for different ingredients, witches can ensure that their moon water potent, high quality, and safe to use.

Essential Oils

It is strongly recommended that you avoid storing citrus essential oils in plastic containers, as the acidity of the oil can cause the plastic to degrade over time. As an alternative, you should store any moon water with essential oils in a glass container in a cool, dark place. This will help to extend the shelf life of the essential oil mixture, often up to several months or even longer, as long as the other ingredients used in the mixture are also shelf stable.

To be extra safe and to get the most out of your essential oil moon water, consider storing them in an dark glass container. This will help to protect the moon water from being exposed to light or heat, both of which can cause the essential oils in the moon water to break down faster.

Dried Herbs

Another simple way to enhance your moon water is to add dried herbs such as rosemary and lavender. These herbs are dried before they are added to the moon water, so they are believed to be safe to store in a cold, dark place for up to a month. You may also choose to add other dried herbs such as sage, thyme, and chamomile.

These herbs are thought to bring additional benefits, such as helping to soothe the mind, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. These herbs are also believed to have healing properties and can provide an extra layer of protection for those who choose to use them in their moon water.

Fresh Herbs

If you don’t have dry herbs, you may decide to include fresh herbs in your moon water. This is okay! Fresh herbs can also be a wonderful way to include plant allies in your practice. Storing moon water with fresh herbs requires something different, though. Moon water with fresh herbs should be stored in a cool, dark place for no more than a week. This is because the herbs may begin to go rancid and spoil your moon water!

Crystals

Some crystals are safe to put in water for long periods of time. Doing this is called making a crystal elixir. However, not all crystals are safe in water, so be sure you do your research and do not ingest water that has had a crystal soaking in it.

If you are storing moon water with crystals in it, be sure that the crystal is not water soluble — meaning it will not dissolve in water — and store it in a cool, dark place. Generally, it should not be kept stored for more than a month.
