The ancients often believed a celestial event like an eclipse to be a bad omen, that the sun or the moon vanishing from the sky was a harbinger of disaster, a sign of devastation or destruction to come.
What is the Meaning of a Lunar Eclipse?
When working with Magic, eclipses are not meant for spellwork or manifestation work, although it depends on who you ask. Instead we just sit back, relax and reflect. As the moon becomes covered by the Earth’s shade, lunar eclipses are a great time for shadow work.
In the context of the Craft, “Shadow work” is generally considered as any meditation/ritual/magic that forces us to confront the darker, hidden parts of ourselves.

This could be traits that you see as evil and bad, traits that feel annoying, shameful, or pathetic. But the shadow doesn’t have to be only unpleasant parts of your personality. It could be that which has been hidden, not allowed expression, pushed below the surface. Your shadow might contain positive qualities that you’re not owning, in addition to negative ones you’re not acknowledging.

Lunar Eclipse Candle Ritual & Shadow Work
A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth’s shadow is cast over the Moon. Follow this Lunar Eclipse candle ritual to reflect explore your own shadow at the same time. Also good for a Dark Moon (New Moon) and a Blood Moon.
Ingredients
1 white candle
1 journal page (print it below)
Pen or pencil
How to cast the Spell
- Light the white candle on your altar.
- When you notice the eclipse is starting, open your ritual by saying:
- Use the Shadow Worksheet journal page below as a guide or simply journal listening to your emotions. Shadow Work keywords are: Discomfort, Bitterness, Fear, Guilt, Shame, Resentment.
- Other ideas for shadow work are: Making art (of any kind!), meditating, making music and/or drumming, keeping a dream journal or Tarot journaling.

Lunar Eclipse Magical Meaning
Eclipses only occur once in a while so it’s a good opportunity to look back at the past 6-12 months. Whether it’s about lessons learned or wishes that came true, we clear the path and open ourselves to new things that will come our way.
Having said this, everyone’s path is different and you may have a different interpretation.
Some Witches see the lunar eclipse as a full cycle (Moon appearing and disappearing) in one night so that gives it a very special power. Others still claim that lunar eclipses are “dangerous“, but this event is an opportunity to experiment with intuitive magic and enhance our psychic abilities.
