:dressed_candle: Weekly Witchy CHALLENGE - Anointing Candles

Merry meet!

Thank you once again to everyone who joined in for last week’s Weekly Witchy Challenge - Witch Fashion :witch_hat:

Although the magickal fashion show has closed its curtains, we’re dressing up something else this week- for fans of candle magick, get ready to light up! :candle::blush:

The theme for this week’s challenge is…

Anointing Dressing Candles Spellwork Witch Challenge

:dressed_candle: :sparkles: Anointing Candles :herb: :diya_lamp:

The process of dressing a candle (also called “anointing”) is the process of mindfully preparing a candle for use in magickal workings. Although optional, it adds additional benefits, associations, and enhancements to the candle, further assisting with the spell and helping a witch guide their intention to success.

Dressing Your Candle

Candles can be purified and consecrated before their use in a ritual for any magical purpose. By anointing the candles we are charging them with our intentions and willpower. This is also done to eliminate all residual energies from any person who handled the candles before you bought them.

Spells8: Candle Magic 101

While dressing a candle often involves preparing a special oil beforehand, the process can be as simple as simply charging a candle with your intention prior to the spell. This extra step requires no additional tools- just a little bit of time and intention to give your spell a powerful boost! :raised_hands:

This week’s challenge is all about anointing/dressing candles - but as always, how you do so is up to you!

So are you ready? Because it’s…

STEP 1 : Dress That Candle! :candle:

This challenge is about candle anointment- but how you choose to take on this theme is up to you!

Candle Anointing Oils :jar:

A common method of anointing candles is by preparing a special oil with which to coat your candle. Dressing oil recipes are abundant- find one that suits your needs, or get creative and craft a custom dressing oil unique to your spell :sparkles:

Dressings with Herbs, Flowers & Spices :hibiscus:

No time to make an oil? No worries! Both dry and fresh natural ingredients can be coated on your candle to add their magickal benefits. Before adding a particular herb, spice, or flower, look into some Green Witchcraft and find the unique magickal properties of the material you want to use.

For safety reasons, dry materials often do not go on the candle itself- you can include them in the spellwork by spreading them around the base of the candle!

Candle Carving :writing_hand:

No additional ingredients required! One form of prepping your candle involves carving into the wax before burning. You might carve the name of the spell recipient, your clear wish or intention, or symbols/sigils that are meaningful to you.

I anoint my candles all the time! I’ve been wanting to try to dress a candle with herbs, but I’ve been hesitant because I’m afraid they’ll catch on fire.
I’ll have to see which herbs and which colored candle I want to use.

I’m leaving for vacation from tomorrow morning and won’t be home until very late Monday night so I need to get this done TODAY! I’ll do a travel protection candle to bring with me on my travels. YAY!

CHALLENGE ENTRY
I decided to use this challenge to make my first Loki candle.
First I worked on a bind rune using the runes for Loki name.
Then as I carved them into the orange candle , we had a little chat.
I lit the candle, and offered a small prayer anointing it to him.
I then asked what he thought, and pulled 2 runes.
First was H (hagalaz) meaning: disruption, testing, controlled crisis. This made me laugh out loud.:joy:
Second was (Dagalaz) meaning awakening, awareness, enlightenment.
This was a serene ritual with a touch of humour. :sparkling_heart:
I noticed that the candle has a ray of light, like a straight line up to the sky. Surreal.

I left him a strong coffee, as I understand he likes coffee.
Happy days. :sparkling_heart:

Wow @tracyS this is fantastic! I read some of your Loki post on an earlier thread but wasn’t able to sink my teeth into it yet. I have yet to be able to connect with Loki in a good way. I have a few stories I can share at some point with you on that note!

Your challenge is well executed and looked to be very successful, I love it! Thank you for sharing it - :coffee: :palms_up_together: :dressed_candle:

Hmm… how did you know I just created two special candles on the Full Moon…?

I think, for this challenge, I want to experiment with Dill. I know we have a course on it, so I’ll start there. Then, I think I’ll craft a candle spell using what I learn about dill! I’ve always loved the way it smells, but I don’t think I’ve ever used it in a spell before!

@tracyS – That looks like a great ritual for Loki. I’m glad you did it and that it seems like a success!

Weekly Witchy CHALLENGE #152 - Anointing/Dressing Candles

I made a travel candle for protection. I will light it tomorrow morning when I do my morning meditation, then cap it and bring it with me and use it each morning I’m gone for my meditation. I used a candle in a tin jar for this purpose since I’m traveling.

I started with one of my premade soy wax bases that I had already infused with sandalwood EO.

I then put frankincense (1 drop), rosemary (2 drops) and cypress (3 drops) EO’s on the wax base.

Then I crushed up rosemary leaves, cypress wood bits, and sprinkled a bit of paprika to boost the overall spell.

Below are the correspondences:
Sandalwood - calming, relaxation, peace
Frankincense - shielding against negative
Rosemary - protection, strength, invigoration
Cypress - healing, protection, good luck
Paprika - boosts the spell

@tracyS Oh! I’m so happy you got to do the challenge & connect with Loki! It looks great & sounds as though it went well :hugs:

@MeganB I love  the smell of Dill & I use it in a recipe I have for Pinwheels. I hope you learn a lot & are able to use it. I have used it in spellwork before, but I’ll be quiet until you learn about it & use it :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

@jan_TheGreenWitch oh safe travels! I bet that smells lovely too  I hope the candle works well for you!

Oh fun, I don’t use candles a whole lot mostly because of time and cats. The lack of time and the peskiness of cats nosing around  But now that I’m down to one cat and he’s not at all a lap cat, I may be able to try this one safely! :dressed_candle: :candle: :diya_lamp:

@jan_TheGreenWitch Thankyou. I’d love to hear your stories with Loki. :sparkling_heart: Your travel candle is lovely, very pretty. Wishing you every blessing on your holiday, and good travels :sparkling_heart:
@MeganB Thankyou. It was a lovely evening. Looking forward to seeing your candles. :sparkling_heart:
@Susurrus Thankyou. This was fun and Loki showed his humour throughout the ritual. When I blew out the candle, a little bit of the wax jumped of and I burnt my finger, nothing serious :joy: but hey ho, I thought he can’t resist a little laugh here and there. :sparkling_heart:
@brandy20 Your candle is gorgeous, I love all the different colours, its so pretty. The display photo is lovely. Very peaceful.:sparkling_heart:

I would like to do this, but I’ll have to think about it

Here’s what the voice inside my head tells me…

I can only use unscented candles because I don’t like artificial fragrances added to the ones in the store. I have asthma and like to breathe, so no added herbs to burn and I never burn essential oils because it destroys the therapeutic healing qualities of the oil!

 Ok, I’m done overthinking now! Yessss!!! I know I have issues

I’m ready now… I can do this challenge! :candle:

Overthink much? Well yes… my intention with this post is to make fun of my Fearful Overthinking Process! When I am aware of my overthinking, I can change it!

No offense intended to anyone!

@marsha I don’t know if it’s overthinking really, more of a things to be aware of for the challenge before beginning! I know you’ll find the best way to go about this. I don’t tend to dress scented candles either. The scented candles I do have are created using essential oils mixed with the wax when the candles are made. I don’t know if that helps any. I hope I didn’t make it more complicated either. :people_hugging:
