:purple_spell_candle: Weekly Witchy CHALLENGE - Candle Divination

Merry meet!

Thank you once again to all those who joined in for last week’s Weekly Witchy Challenge - Finding Your Magickal Talents :witch_pentacle:

With the many magickal skills of the Coven still shining in the spotlight, we’re putting our skills to the test this week with a special type of candle magick! :white_candle:

The theme for this week’s challenge is…

Candle Divination Witch Challenge

:candle: :mag: Candle Divination :fire: :sparkles:

Let your candle light the way- what messages and answers will you find?

You’ve heard of divination and you’ve heard of candle magick- this is the crossroads where these two popular areas of magick intersect. Candle divination is the art of using spell candles to find answers, receive messages, view the past or present, or seek guidance.

There are many methods of divination out there, and when it comes to selecting a tool or medium, candles are a wonderful choice for both beginner and experienced casters alike. Candles are easily found in many stores and are inexpensive to purchase (as opposed to a fancy crystal ball or deck of tarot cards). Additionally, there are numerous ways to use a candle for divination- from reading wax to flame to smoke :fog: :mag:

With a bit of fun experimentation, you’ll have an easy means of divination accessible whenever you do a candle spell!

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

This week’s challenge is all about candle divination - how you choose to take on this theme is up to you!

So are you ready? Because it’s…

CHALLENGE TIME!

A Note Before Beginning: The Importance of Candle Prep

Clear the way to a successful reading with a bit of easy prep work! Although the messages of the divine may manifest everywhere when necessary, the best way to ensure messages come through clearly and intentionally is by divining from a spell candle.

This does not mean you have to purchase a special magickal candle- not at all! Any mundane candle can be turned into a spell candle simply by using it for spellwork purposes :candle: :sparkles:

Example: Spontaneously trying to find meaning in your dinner table candle wax leftovers is not likely to yield messages from higher powers.

On the other hand, mindfully preparing a candle with your intention and actively calling to the divine while it burns draws on your magickal powers. This candle has a much higher chance of showing you meaningful messages from your guides, spirits, guardian angels, the Universe, or whomever you call upon.

How to Make a Mundane Candle into a Spell Candle

It’s as easy as setting your intention- a simple, but key step in any magickal working! With your focus (aka what you want this spell to achieve) in mind, you are charging the candle and giving the energy a clear direction to go in.

While setting your intention is enough to make your candle a spell candle, you might also take the optional step of cleansing it prior to use in spellwork. This removes any energy it may have picked up on its journey to you and gives you a clean slate on which to attach your goal.

How-to-Cleanse-a-Candle-Witchcraft
3 Methods to Cleanse a Spell Candle

Additional pre-spellwork prep ideas can include dressing/anointing your candle and carving sigils into the wax- but again, these are all optional! As long as your intention is set, you have yourself a spell candle.

And with a spell candle in hand, you’re ready to use it for candle divination! :grinning: :candle:

Ohh, this one should be fun! I’ll have to sit this one out since all my candles are gone and packed away, but I look forward to seeing everyone else’s entries! :dressed_candle:

I’ve been reluctant to light many candles after “the red headed Celt that shall not be named” enjoyed Her little inferno not long ago. :fire: I suppose I can better fire proof my altar so She doesn’t burn down my whole bookcase. :green_heart:

Ok, here’s an odd experience for you. I always use tealights, and I always have them set in a holder, so they always sit at the same angle.

Notice the wax stays in the cup, no overflow, no tilting. Yes, these have been burned once. That’s how it usually looks.

During my time fighting against an energy vampire (or 4), the wax would somehow grow up one side of the tin as though the wax itself were trying to get away. It always climbed the side furthest from where I sat. I finally got the fangs out, and the wax went back to acting normally. I’ll be able to use this wax feature as a warning next time I’m not paying attention to other warnings, if I remember it.

:witch_pentacle: :pentacle_tarot: :witch_pentacle:

I used to blow out my candles. Sometimes, that would leave little droplets of wax on my altar cloth and table. Hard to clean out of fabric, so I quit using an altar cloth.

Then I found an intricate hummingbird snuffer I really like.

Wax on the bottom of the bell of a snuffer scratches off fairly easily; but if you don’t notice it and put the snuffer down, it can leave a ring of wax or even color on the altar or cloth.

To keep the wax off the bottom of the bell, I only partially cover the tealight tin and wait until I see a bit of smoke coming around the open area. That is not always doable with tapers or glass jars.

The cool part is when all the candles are out: I tip the bell opening up against a dark background and can see a bit of leftover smoke exit the bell. It is very faint and short lived, like a deity’s final word.

:witch_pentacle: :pentacle_tarot: :witch_pentacle:

A fun bit of science magic I learned as a teen. Just a cool party trick, if anyone is interested.

When extinguishing a candle, have a funnel and a flame close at hand. Quickly hold the funnel over the candle so the wide part is covering the candle. Put the flame near the funnel’s smallest opening, and the candle will flicker back to life!

The science behind it is that the smoke from an extinguished candle holds microscopic droplets of wax, which then catch fire and “lead the flame back to” the wick. The funnel focuses the smoke toward the fresh flame.

What does it mean? Even an extinguished, still hot, candle is dangerous. This may explain why larger fires are so difficult to get under control.

It’s as though the smoke itself carries a bit of the life force of the candle. Makes me wonder about our own breath, carrying more than sound or intention. If this is true, perhaps our ancestors were on to something when they collected the last words of a dying person.

@georgia ooh I love this. Thanks for sharing the science too.

 I love the topic but between my nosey buddies, Kermit and the other one (my SO  ) I’ll have to figure a way to try this one out without one of them knocking candles over and the other asking… :man_shrugging: what are you doing?

Wow, this is going to be a challenge. I’m just getting comfortable with tarot. LOL!

Ooo… I was looking at the candles :candle: on my altars, thinking that I should light them & also thinking about a previous conversation about incense :incense: smoke. I could see if I noticed any movements outside of how they normally burn. I have a couple of options here!

I will have to look into some topics about both to see what I can come up with; I have had other experiences with candles when I knew they were doing something for a situation that I wasn’t consciously aware of at the time. :witch_pentacle:

This will be fun & a nice little nudge to get back to some of my routine things in a comfortable way :hugs:

Perfect I’ve always had a strange relationship with candles. So, why am I wanting to wimp out of this one? :woman_shrugging:t2:  :woman_facepalming:t2:

It is really funny that my other two dieties are related to fire and I haven;t researched candle magick in depth  Up until now I can understand what Aphrodite has to tell me through the candles on her altar and that was all.
Maybe Ares and Hestia know that if I work more with fire I will burn my house :smiling_face_with_tear:

:astonished: … I’m now thinking too much about what my own words could be. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I have two cats and cats have absolutely no sense of temperature. Raven casually walked past a candle early on and his tail burnt. I had to cut the fur off a little bit.

This made me worry a lot about this…

But they’ve since learnt to look and not touch.

We’re really being kept on our toes, huh?

Because you subconsciously know more than you think you know, and you’re gonna blow your own mind.

Eek, I worry about this, too. Especially if I have to burn something. I got a bit too eager with spellfire earlier in the year and that was a bit too spectacular of a flame in my cauldron. :grimacing:

I created a spell jar and dressed the candle. Once I had dressed a candle, it caught the entire candle on fire as the little bits burned. Made me a bit apprehensive but I continued to try different ways of dressing my candles to see what may happen. With this current spell jar, I dressed the candle with ground jezebel root, cinnamon and coffee. I never had this happen before but the candle seems to give off little fireworks. They look like stars but no burning or heat when they land. The mundane explanation probably involves the chemicals in the candle dressing but it only happens for this spell jar. When I snuff the candle, the smoke immediately comes to me, circles and goes away. I truly believe that these little sparkles, combined with a tall steady flame, signify the universe is listening. Anyone else ever seen this? It’s quite amazing

It’s the cinnamon that makes sparks. Look up cinnamon and dressing candles. They will show u. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It sounds really neat! :candle: :sparkles: :grinning: When it comes to sparking candles, I’ve had some like what Devenne said- one of the ingredients I dressed with or had at the base ignited, causing sparks. Honey on candles has caused sparking for me before. That being said, it’s constant- if I put too much on, I know what caused the reaction. In your case it sounds like it might be different, since it’s only happening with this one specific spell blend.

Whatever is causing it, so long as it isn’t a fire hazard, I bet it’s really neat and beautiful to see! :fire:

I love this- what a great message from the Universe! :candle: :sparkles:

What a beautiful snuffer! The design is so intricate and pretty  It sounds like you use your snuffer with the utmost of respect and take very good care of it too. May it continue to serve you well! :hearts:

That’s awesome! I didn’t know this about the smoke and the wax- it’s interesting to learn about. I’d like to try this trick with relighting via the smoke sometime :grinning: :candle:

Thank you for sharing your candle wisdom and tips, @georgia! :candle:

So this is something that I have always been fascinated with, and I un-intentionally tried it with a candle spell last week. The spell called for either blowing out the candle or waiting for it to burn down. I tried 3 times to blow it out with no success, so I took that as a sign to wait… and I started watching the flame.
I felt drawn in to the flames twitches and colors and the length… and I began to see and feel things deep into my soul. It was a very powerful and a bit unsettling at first, but then I stopped “fighting it” and answers came to questions I had not asked yet.

I haven’t tried it again, but being this weeks challenge I intend to!!

I have used candles for an un-binding spell but paid more attention to the wax and string burning rather than the flames themselves. It takes some serious patience and concentration… and those are not normally my strong suits! LOL
