The two phrases, waxing and waning moon, refer to the periods of time when the moon appears to be growing or shrinking in size. It is easy to get the two confused! A waxing moon occurs after a new moon as more of the moon is visible in the sky each night. A waning moon occurs after a full moon as less of the moon is visible in the sky each night. Waxing means growing and waning means shrinking.

When you look up into the sky and see a crescent, it might be difficult to tell if the moon is waxing or waning if you don’t know what phase came before. Just think of this! If the shadow is on the left side of the moon then it is waxing. If it is on the right, it is waning!
