đŸ“ș Weekly Witchy CHALLENGE - Witchy Media

Merry meet!

Thank you once again to everyone who joined in for last week’s Weekly Witchy Challenge - Sleep & Dream Magick :sleeping_bed:

Rise and shine for a brand new theme- this week we’re turning on the TV (or a magazine, or a book, etc) to enjoy some witchy entertainment :grinning:

The theme for this week’s challenge was suggested by the creative @Kasandra and is

Witch Media Stories Books TV Movies Challenge

:tv: :books: Witchy Media: The Wide World of Witchery :newspaper: :iphone:

For better or for worse, witches have played various roles in stories throughout the centuries. As media developed and changed over time- from word of mouth to written tales, to tv and radio, to the modern web and streaming- so too have the depictions of witches changed and developed :mage:

Stories and tales are magickal things- they provide inspiration and encouragement, teach us morals and important life lessons, show us new possibilities, foster creativity, and open up new paths that we hadn’t considered before :railway_track:

While some witches in the modern day are masters of technomancy and technologic magick, you don’t have be a master of technological spellwork to be able to find magick in the media!

This week’s challenge is about exploring witchy and magickal media- but as always, how you do so is up to you!

can i ask does it have to be fiction portrayal or can it be ( i noticed blogs or podcasts included ) can this include exploring say like witchy channels that talk about particular areas of witchcraft? i hope that question made sense

Great question, Phoenix! Any form of media is fine for this challenge and the content can be fictional, non-fictional, historical, fantastical, etc.- anything and everything so long as it relates to or inspires your personal magickal practice :mage: :star2:

Absolutely! There are a lot of great witchy channels out there across the platforms- feel free to share your favorite(s) or explore some new ones!

This is great, thanks for clarifying this. it actually works well as i have been exploring the type of magic i resonate with and how many types of magic come into a particular theme or intention? area of life? not sure. but i am not sure yet but i am feeling drawn towards cottage witch ( or i joke an ecclectic cottage witch). its also called hearth witch or house witch and i found out it focuses more within the home and combines both green witchcraft and kitchen witchcraft and says its about bringing magic into everyday life. it seems to resonate with me, but i dont feel i strictly fall into one type of anything lol which is why i say maybe its more ecclectic cottage witch as i also use divination, crystals, tech, creative expression, elements and maybe a bit of crossover to hedge witchcraft. but i am not sure if some of that can fall into cottage witchcraft or would fall outside that. so i was actually looking at looking at some of the video channels to explore this more. there are a few id already discovered but not seen in a while some maybe not looked at as much, but this actually is a great challenge as it looks like i can fit what im already looking at doing! yay im excited

Challenge entry

I have always loved reading and watching things related to magic and witch craft. I may add to the is post as the week goes on as my memory starts to share some of its secrets :joy: I saw a post somewhere on here about adhd and memory, I may have to explore that further, but I digress.

The King’s Buccaneer by Raymond E Feist. Stand alone novel although with characters from his Riftwar saga. Basically- King has son with deformed foot. None of the magicians or healers could heal it and a son of the king shouldnt be deformed. There were issues. Anyway, his son grapples with his deformity amidst the other things going on, and learns that he was fighting the healing, which at first he rejects, but then he learns done more about himself and the magician is able to heal him. I liked this as it is a reminder to recognize when we are in our own way and to look into that. “And I will do my part” that is the end of every prayer request I make. Recognizing I am not on a passive journey in my life, I need to participate in my journey.

The Magician by Raymond E Fiest, part of Riftwar
Saga, is about a person who can’t seem to do magic very well but ends up being very powerful, being able to use it differently. Simply, I like this as it shows how important it is to believe in ourselves no matter the journey.

Lady of Hay, Barbara Erskine, about reincarnation and time travel. Very good book. I couldnt put it down.

Deoborah Harkness writes about mythical creatures. One book I am doing a book review on the spells 8 post is awesome, so is the second book of the series. I connected with the concept that if you spend a lot of time running away or denying your magical side it won’t just come when you want it to. You have to keep practicing.

There are some witchy detective novels I like. I can’t remember the name of one of them but the women found each other, created a coven and helped solve some mysteries and helped their friend get away from her abusive husband, including low humming in the gallery so that he got irritated and exploded in front of the judge- up until then he was presenting as perfect.

I liked the show Sabrina the teenage witch. Cute fun show. Made me chuckle and wish I could have magic like that.

I performed a scene form Macbeth with the witches. I dressed up and my makeup was so good I scared the crap out of our boarder. It felt really good to cackle

I like the video game, the Witcher and Skyrim with its mages. It is fun to be able to play roles in the game. I love completing quests and they tend to be easier and more entertaining than life. I really should start to set up my life with mini quests and give myself level up points each time I complete enough mini quests. The mundane may seem so much more fun. Now, to figure out what skills I level up for doing these tasks. E.g. Remembering to enchant my tea for a month may make me a level 1 kitchen witch or level one potion brewer😁

That’s all for now. Cheers!

Oh, yay, I can finally get in on a challenge early, as I am home sick from work today! I have always been drawn to TV shows and movies about witchcraft. While some (most? :joy:) of them are by no means cinematic masterpieces, I still watch them repeatedly and know all of the lines. One of these is Practical Magic. Sure, it’s cheesy, but it’s so much fun! One of the lines I love in this movie is when Sally’s aunt says, “You can’t practice witchcraft while looking down your nose at it.” I relate to this because the fact that I was raised Catholic taught me an unfortunate bias against it. I used to need to remind myself often that it was just programming that caused resistance and fear, but now I’m past that.
Another movie I love is The Craft. I know pretty much all the lines of that one too. It’s such a fun movie! There are so many more, but my brain isn’t functioning at its best right now.
I also enjoy a lot of television shows with a magickal theme, like Charmed (the original, but also the remake), Sabrina (again, the original and the remake), oh, and The Magicians! That show was surprisingly amazing! While they rarely said “Witch” or “Witchcraft” for whatever reason, the principles were the same. That show is actually critically acclaimed, and I highly recommend it!
As for books, well, there are far too many to name. I used to sell witchy books on eBay, so I have hundreds of them! There are also a bunch of websites on Magick that I read regularly, but Spells8 is my favorite!

Oh, a single challenge entry doesn’t seem to be enough! There are at least three pieces of media that I would like to discuss (if I have the time—my family and I have some plans for Easter).

139 Weekly Witchy CHALLENGE - Witchy Media

Challenge entry - Garnet

My favorite magic movie and character? As a senior Nerd
Lord of the Rings and Gandalf. “You shall not pass!”
The scariest is the Witch in Robin Hood, the Kevin Costner movie.

Did you know that Witchcraft didn’t begin with the bible? Many beliefs come from the Bible, Old Testament verses condemn witches, such as the oft-cited Exodus 22:18, which says, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” Additional Biblical passages caution against divination, chanting, or using witches to contact the dead.

The Muslim religion is much more complicated on the subject, but they aren’t too happy with it believing that it is sleight of hand, or dancing with the Devil.
In our ‘enlightened times’ much of acceptance or banishment comes down to terminology.

Buddhism
Ultimately witchcraft is about building personal power, which does align with Buddhist teaching. Furthermore, a lot of witchcraft is about learning & respecting nature, which also aligns with Buddhist teachings. So any type of craft that focuses on learning from plants & animals in order to better understand the world around you & the world within you is compatible with Buddhism
And, so it is, in modern times that Witchcraft is viewed with good, bad, and indifferent attitudes.

But! Isn’t there always a but? sigh

The magical rituals in history

Ancient Egypt acknowledged magic, Gods and goddesses were magic, and Priests were the main practitioners of magic in pharaonic Egypt, where they were seen as guardians of secret knowledge given by the gods to humanity to ‘ward off the blows of fate’. Every home held an artifact of the God/Goddess they worshipped.

2 noted books would be the Book of the Living and the Book of the Dead
The Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts depict Heka as a supernatural energy that the gods possess. Egypt had one of the largest and most complex pantheons of gods of any civilization in the ancient world.

1300–650 B.C.

Ariadne to Calypso, Circe to Medea, Hermes to Hecate, magic, divination, and necromancy are widespread and intertwined with chthonic Gods and monsters, oracles, and heroes.
I won’t go into it now, it would take too long, besides I want to go back, if possible, in history.

The Japanese had yin-yang priests called Onmyouji, who practiced a vast number of magic rituals based on Feng Shui techniques borrowed from China.
Scandinavians divined the future in runes.
Romans sacrificed animals during ceremonies dedicated to the gods, and predicted the future according to the state of the organs of these animals. Thus, magic rituals have been grouped on domains such as divination, invocation of spirits, possession, necromancy, and many others.

Native Americans, for example, are known for their rituals to call for rain, practiced during periods of drought.
The Mayas and Aztecs practiced bloody rituals based on human sacrifice in order to appease the gods from the heavens and to gain abundance and prosperity.
Voodoo priests carried out death-sending ceremonies under the patronage of Baron Samedi, a Loa (spirit) of Haitian voodoo. Everything related to death belonged to the domain of Baron Samedi who, as the god of death and resurrection, was able to shorten or immediately end the life of the one upon whom he had been sent. He is the Great Boss [Loa], and probably the most infamously famous character in the Vodou pantheon. Stylish and sinister, he wears a black tailcoat, a glossy top hat, and dark eyeglasses. You guessed it — he’s dressed like an undertaker. I don’t know much about Voodoo, so rather than mislead, I’ll go on from here.
(LOA - the Haitian Spirits of Direction (Vodou mythology))
You know, I found it hard to find information beyond the pre-Colombian era. It’s not that they had no magic, but it is hard to translate petroglyphs into words. I wish I could have gone further back, but without a time machine, I am destined to fail.
Let me Bless you all and send love and strength

I am a big fan of the anthology series American Horror Story, particularly season 3 called Coven. This was my favourite season even before I became involved in magick and the craft myself.

It is set in New Orleans and centres around Miss Robicheaux’s school for the gifted and talented. Each of the witches present has a power including telepathy, clairvoyancy and telekinesis.

They are overseen by Cordelia and her mother Fiona, the supreme (top witch). She is so desperate to keep her power but she grows week as the power in another rises to take her place. She suspects one of the students and murders her but that doesnt stop her growing weaker. Someone else is vowing to take her place.

The students take part in a ritual known as the seven wonders (cue guest appearance from Stevie Nicks as the white witch). Only a supreme can pass all 7:

Telekinesis - manipulation of objects with the mind
Concilium - mind control
Transmutation - teleporting
Divination - the sight
Pyrokinesis - create, control manipulate fire
Vitalum Vitalis - healing and ressurection
Descensum - visit your own personal hell and return

Needless to say, not everyone makes it through. We see Fionas demise and her take her place in her own hell
not a place of fire and brimstone but a miserable life stuck in a miserable home with a man she doesnt love being repeated over and over again.

Side stories include coven rivalry with the voodoo queen Marie Laveau (who summons Papa Legba to aid her) as well as a run in with an jazz playing axeman and rivals joining forces to overcome witch hunters. There is also the cruel and gruesome Madam Delphine (Kathy Bates) who was cursed to live forever before being buried alive in the 1800s. She is dug up and has to face the changes in society that she has heard going on on the.ground above her.

All ends well with a new loving supreme and what I liked about the end is that they open up the world about who they are. There is no hiding, no secrets and no shame. Everyone is free to be themselves and use their talents and powers.for the greater good. Yes it might be cheesy and not accurate but I enjoy it for what it is
a piece of entertainment

Ps i absolutely LOVE Cordelia’s apothecary workspace! Maybe one day

It all began with Final Fantasy for me! :smile_cat: Those games taught me the elements, and that you can call to the ancient Gods and Goddesses to come to you when you need help. They taught me about the power of love, and how it’s stronger than all darkness combined. They taught me that our Earth is a beautiful living being, and that we’re part of her. They taught me that spells are cool and useful, and that you can create your own magical artifacts. They taught me what a proper adventure looks and feels like, and that even if it ends up as big as saving the world (it always does), it was always about your own self-actualization, and the love for those along with you on the ride. Cherish them always.

Some of my favorite quotes

“I always thought this planet was so huge. But lookin’ at it from space, I realized it’s so small. We’re just floatin’ in the dark.
kinda makes you feel powerless. [
] That’s why I say this planet’s still a kid. A little kid sick and trembling in the middle of this huge universe. Someone’s gotta protect it. Ya follow me? That someone is us.” – Cid Highwind, FFVII

“What to do? Have you lost your way? When that happens we each have to take a good long look at our selves. There’s always something in the deepest reaches of our hearts. Something buried, or something forgotten. Remember it
Whatever that is, must certainly be what you are all looking for
” – Bugenhagen, FFVII

“Eventually
all humans die. What happens to them after they die? The body decomposes, and returns to the Planet. That much everyone knows. What about their consciousness, their hearts and their souls? The soul too returns to the Planet. And not only those of humans, but everything on this Planet. In fact, all living things in the universe, are the same.” – Bugenhagen, FFVII

“Look always to the eternal flow of time which is far greater than the span of human life. It will teach you more, than staying here in the valley
What you will see will eventually become part of the life’s dream.” – Bugenhagen, FFVII

“Right and wrong are not what separate us and our enemies. It’s our different standpoints, our perspectives that separate us. Both sides blame one another. There’s no good or bad side. Just two sides holding different views.” – Squall, FFVIII

“No matter what happens, even if you become the world’s enemy
I’ll be your knight.” – Squall, FFVIII

“I don’t want the future. I want the present to stand still. I just want to stay here with you
” – Squall, FFVIII

“Someone might not be there. Someone you love may disappear before your very eyes. It’s tough when you live your life thinking that way. But that’s why I fight
” – Irvine, FFVIII

“You’ve all heard this before. How life has infinite possibilities. I don’t believe that one bit. There weren’t many paths for me to choose. Sometimes, there would only be one. From the limited possibilities I faced, the choices I made have brought me this far. That’s why I value the path I chose
I want to hold true to the path that HAD to be taken.” – Irvine, FFVIII

“But
who cares!? I speak with passion, from the heart! That’s what matters most.” – Laguna, FFVIII

“Oh how I love thee Instructor Quistis, I cannot sleep at night thinking of your radiating beauty, that is why I am always falling asleep in class
Oh
how sinful you are
” – Trepie Groupie #1

“Sometimes you can’t think everything out. You have to listen to your heart.” – Zidane, FFIX

"I don’t think we build cemeteries for the dead. Sure, it may seem pointless to you, but
How can I describe it? It’s so that we can think like this: “We’ll never forget you. We’ll remember you every time we stand at your grave. And we won’t let the fear of death, which each of us knows, stop us from living our lives. Because my friends will remember me when I’m here.” – Black Mage No.288, FFIX

“Life is connected, one to another
If you trace the root of all life, there exists one source.” – Garland, FFIX

“Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!” – Auron, FFX

“Let’s go to the sea, before sunrise. The city lights go out, one by one, the stars fade, then the horizon glows, almost like it’s on fire. It’s kinda rose-colored, right? First the sea, then it spreads to the sky, then to the whole city. It gets brighter and brighter till everything glows. It’s really pretty. I know you’d like it.” – Tidus, FFX

“So this is what it feels like. It’s a much more wonderful feeling than anything I had ever imagined. Wonderful
but it hurts sometimes. I wonder. I just want to say thank you for everything. Maybe that’s why it hurts. When I think about us never being together again at all, I’m afraid.” – Yuna, FFX

“It would be so easy
to let my fate just carry me away
following this same path my whole life through. But I know
I can’t. What I do, I do
with no regrets.” – Yuna, FFX

“My father
 I loved him. So I
I will live with my sorrow, I will live my own life! I will defeat sorrow, in his place. I will stand my ground and be strong. I don’t know when it will be, but someday
I will conquer it. And I will do it without
 false hope.” – Yuna, FFX

“The road is ahead of us, so let’s start out today. Just, one more thing
the people and the friends that we have lost, or the dreams that have faded
Never forget them.” – Yuna, FFX

These were the games that taught me about enchantment :magic_wand: :dizzy:  :sparkling_heart: :sparkles:
Cherished my heart, broke it into a million little pieces, put it back together, and did it all over again.

@Phoenix_Fire I’m so happy you’re excited, Phoenix- it sounds like you already have some great channels in mind to explore!

And actually, since you mentioned cottage witchery, one channel in particular came right to my mind- have you come across videos from The Green Witch Channel in your exploration? She has come really cozy green and cooking videos that have that lovely “cottage witch” vibe that you might enjoy! :house_with_garden: :hearts:

@stavroula From one magical nerd to another, I cannot wait to hear all about your favorite witchy media!

@Phoenix_Rose These all sound amazing- you have quite the collection of witchy media, Phoenix! :star_struck: And you’ve got another vote for The Witcher from me, I really love that game. It’s a lot darker than what I usually tend to enjoy, but the amazing characters and pure possibilities in the open world are too exciting to pass by- it’s a great one! :crossed_swords: :sparkles::blush:

Thank you so much for sharing- if any more pop into your mind as the week goes by, feel free to add them in!:books:

@BrightBear I can tell that you have some witchy classics that are very close to your heart- you know when you can recite a movie from memory that it’s a special one! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: And gosh, you must truly have a big collection of witchy books, that’s so fun! :books:

Thank you very much for sharing your faves- I’m so sorry to hear you’re sick, I hope you’re getting lots of good rest and that you feel better soon!:candle:

@Kasandra I can’t wait to hear about your favorites, Kasandra! And wishing you and your family a happy Easter- enjoy the holiday! :two_hearts:

@Garnet Magick, magick everywhere- it’s so cool to look at magick and witches on a global scale! Even if a lot of witch history is on the darker side, it’s inspirational to see that there were cultures and time periods where magick was welcome, or even included as an important part of people’s lives.

That was a great reflection and exploration of magick across the centuries and cultures- thank you for sharing it, Garnet! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@MeganB Yay! :partying_face:

@Airam I’m so glad you’re excited about the theme, Airam! I can’t wait to read your entry. Good luck and have fun! :sparkling_heart:

@Cosmic_Curiosity I hear a lot about American Horror Story, but I’m a big baby and I avoid anything with “horror” in the name :joy: It sounds like I’ve been missing out though- this sounds like a neat show (with a happy ending too!) :sparkles:

Also that workspace
wow :star_struck: The show may not have been trying to depict real witches and magick, but they sure knew how to appeal to a real witch’s sense of aesthetics! That’s a gorgeous space :potted_plant: :two_hearts:

@Artemisia Hooray! Looking forward to seeing what you’ll choose to do :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@CelestiaMoon Ohhh Celestia, this is lovely! Reading your entry I can see a lot of myself mirrored in what you’ve said- although I never got into Final Fantasy (closest I got was Kingdom Hearts!) I feel the same way about a different series called Tales Of. Fun magickal adventures with interesting characters using their powers in creative ways- the games helped nurtured my love for magick and writing. Like you and Final Fantasy, they’ll always have a place in my heart! Games are truly magickal things :heartpulse:

Thank you so much for sharing, and for the awesome quotes and music too! It’s a series famous for its music for a reason- they really didn’t cut any corners with the soundtrack! :notes::dancer:
