Lunisolar Lunar New Year Zodiac Challenge

:red_gift_envelope: :full_moon_with_face: The Lunisolar Calendar and Chinese Zodiac :tiger: :izakaya_lantern:

:fireworks: Happy Lunar Year! :fireworks:

Also called the ā€œChinese New Yearā€ when referring to celebrations in China, the Lunar New Year is a special moment in the yearly cycle for all those who follow the Lunar Calendar.

Unlike the Gregorian Calendar (Jan - Dec) many of us are most familiar with or the Pagan Calendar (that follows the Wheel of the Year and begins at the Witchā€™s New Year/Samhain), the Lunar Calendar (sometimes also called the Lunisolar Calendar) does not have set days that stay the same each year, but rather vary based on the changing phases of the moon.

Most calendars referred to as ā€œlunarā€ calendars are in fact lunisolar calendars. Their months are based on observations of the lunar cycle, with intercalation being used to bring them into general agreement with the solar year. The solar ā€œcivic calendarā€ that was used in ancient Egypt showed traces of its origin in the earlier lunar calendar, which continued to be used alongside it for religious and agricultural purposes. Present-day lunisolar calendars include the Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindu, and Thai calendars.

Synodic months are 29 or 30 days in length, making a lunar year of 12 months about 11 to 12 days shorter than a solar year.

For 2022, The Lunar New Year officially begins on Tuesday, February 1st :tada:

@Kasandra Iā€™m an Earth Snake too! :earth_asia: :snake: or for my primal zodiac selfā€¦ aā€¦ jellyfish. This wil be fun seeing how these fit my personality. I hope I donā€™t come across as venomous though!

EDIT:

The little cogs in this funny little brain of mine have been spinning non-stop since I dipped my pinkie toe into this challenge. I already knew that my Chinese zodiac was Year of the Snake. So that would make me an Earth Snake. Which I was cool with as I have loved snakes all my life. But Iā€™m not going to lie that at first I was a little disappointed when I found out that my Primal Zodiac Animal with a mix of my eastern and western zodiacs of Virgo and Snake was aā€¦ jellyfish. I felt like it was a little bit of an anti-climax. Huh. A jellyfishā€¦ really?

But the aspects of the four of these together:

A Virgo: patient, kind, hard-working, reliable, creative, picky, stubborn, uptight, overthinking and critical.

Earth: practical, loyal, materialistic and inflexible.

A snake: intelligent, wise, charming, alluring, deep-thinking, determined, possessive, distrustful and jealous.

A jellyfish: intellectual but cautious.

To be associated with two venomous creatures in my zodiac. Does that make me a toxic and nasty person? Am I filled with poisonous venom? Is that a bad thing?

Then my mind started thinking hmmm snakes and jellyfishā€¦ some species can be highly venomous and extremely dangerous, especially if provoked; basically donā€™t mess with me kind of vibe.

So this got me thinking why is it that some snakes and jellyfish use venom? According to our most beloved knower of all things Google the simple answer is: 1. for foraging - overpowering their prey and 2. for self-defence against potential predators, in a nutshell getting what they want and as a form of potent protection.

Maybe we all need to harness our inner venom. 2022 is supposed to be all about me and my onesies. All about healing myself after escaping that 15 year emotionally abusive relationship to a using, lying cheating, narcissistic skeez-bag.

So this all gave me inspiration for something along very similar lines to my Emotional Healing Spell Jar. Stay tuned. Iā€™ll be busy this weekend!

Hereā€™s what I came up withā€¦

I would like to share this one for anyone who would like it; I was having a flip through one of my newest spell booksā€¦. ā€˜Spells for a Magical Year: 100 Rituals and Enchantments for Prosperity, Power and Fortuneā€™ by Sarah Bartlett.

Chinese New Year - A Feng Shui Charm for Prosperity: January 31st

The Chinese New Year falls on a day within two weeks of this date, depending on the lunar calendar. If you perform this ancient Chinese feng shui enchantment, you can be sure that whether itā€™s the Year of the Rat or Year of the Dragon, the energy is aligned in your home for a prosperous year ahead. Feng shui (ā€œfengā€ meaning ā€windā€ and ā€œshuiā€ meaning ā€œwaterā€) is the Chinese art of placement for harmonious living. It is aligned to Taoist magic which dates back to 2000 BC E. This use of energy alignment has also been used in acupuncture and Chinese healing arts.

In feng shui the placement of crystals in your home corresponds to certain energies that will benefit your wealth and success. The northwest and west areas of your home correspond to success and prosperous living, while diamonds, selenite, white quartz, and silver all are symbolic of financial success.

What you will need:

  • 1 white candle
  • A silver gilt or silver framed mirror
  • A silver chalice, cup or bowl (pewter of stainless steel)
  • A silver or silver-coloured necklace
  • 1 diamond, piece of selenite or white quartz crystal
  • A red envelope, packet or sheet of red paper folded up, containing 3 silver-colured coins

First create a sacred corner in the west or northwest corner of your home. This can be on a raised table, shelf or window ledge. To make this area sacred, simply light a white candle and stand it in the corner. Now say,

ā€œWelcome to the deities of heaven and earth, and to the Jade Emperor, ruler of heaven.ā€

To empower you with self-belief and added motivation for the rest of the year, place the silver framed mirror against the wall and the silver vessel in front of the mirror. Drape a silver necklace around the mirror. Place a diamond, piece of selenite, or white quartz crystal in front of the mirror too, and in front of those, the red envelope (red is symbolic of success in Chinese tradition). These metal totems will improve your business and career dealings and bring you the success you deserve.

Remove all the items at the end of the following month and store safely away.

How fun to share a Zodiac sign and element! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: And I think your Primal Sign is actually really exciting! While what you originally thought is one way to interpret it, I love how you spun it around: animals donā€™t have venom to be ā€œnastyā€ or ā€œtoxicā€, they developed those traits in order to defend themselves. And they are really good at doing so! :snake: :shield:

Perhaps this year is about spitting out the venom and building up a strong protection (and perhaps powerful reputation) for yourself- you are one strong and mighty person, Jessica! :muscle: :sparkles: Good luck with your Emotional Healing Spell Jar- youā€™ve got this!

I love this!!! A perfect spell to share for the challenge- thank you so much, Jessica! :heart_hands:

Here!!! :grinning: :rooster: Iā€™m a rooster too, Jeannie! :handshake: Cheers to us roosters, and it looks like you found some very interesting qualities for our sign- thank you for sharing them!

I hope the breakthrough you are waiting for comes for you soon- until then, keep on working hard and being courageous! Remember that you have the heart of a determined and brave rooster! :rooster: :sun_with_face:

Yesterday afternoon I was actually reading up on this stuff.

As you know I have been on a ā€œfeather missionā€ and have been practicing a lot.

Just doodling a few yesterday with my new pens, I noticed that a few of my doodles looked like creatures. (The flower was purposeful)

But the first one that I looked up was that of a rat and it came about as a Feng Shui symbol.

How nuts is that!

I donā€™t type specifics always I just allow the symbolic to show itself.

I am in awe at this! Just wow!

Weekly Witchy Challenge: The Lunisolar Calendar and Chinese Zodiac

Plus the Lunisolar calendar

Western vs. Eastern: a comparison

Astrology has more or less been divided into three regions; western, eastern and oriental.

Western astrology refers to the tropical zodiac systems very prevalent in Europe and the Americas, and western astrology is very good at character analysis, but gets flak for being more wrong than right

Eastern astrology pretty much just refers to Indian or Vedic astrology. Vedic astrology gives excellent predictions and karmic insight. Vedic astrology has a documented reputation for being accurate.

Oriental astrology is that system practiced in China, Tibet and Mongolia. It utilizes a 60-year cycle of time instead of astronomical calculations. The oriental systems help us understand the cycles of the Earth and how energy transforms during the years and seasons. Chinese astrology does not only year, but month, day and hour. In fact, it is entirely possible to have a different animal for each part. ā€œEEK!ā€

Excerpts from - a 1 photography homework ā€“ Science of the Stars

Lunisolar calendar is a calendar in many cultures, combining lunar calendars and solar calendars. The date of Lunisolar calendars therefore indicates both the Moon phase and the time of the solar year, that is the position of the Sun in the Earthā€™s sky. Lunisolar calendar - Wikipedia

Unfortunately, my experience with astrology is:

  1. Western, I read in the papers
  2. Eastern, I read on Chinese restaurant menuā€™s.
  3. Lunisolar calendar - can I just say Iā€™m Chinese Challenged?

After reading the comparison, Iā€™d rather pull out my hair and run scream from the room than continue thisā€¦um treasure hunt?

And so, my understanding of astrology will end. Wants to endā€¦HAS to end. (Jeez, I started drooling!) This subject is so convoluted, deep and confusing, as to make me crazy! Iā€™d end up in a straight jacket! (DRAMA QUEEN AT HER BEST!) :face_in_clouds:
So I sighed and said; ā€œIā€™m going to take a nap.ā€ And went back to bed.

Iā€™m a Water Ox and together with Aquarius that makes my Primal sign a Walrus. I can see it, but man I wish I was something more sightly than a walrus. LOL.

It says in the horoscope for this year that in the years of the Tiger, Oxen can find themselves bewildered, and instead of making plans, I should be more impulsive. Iā€™ll make a note to do just that. :ox:

I decide to look into the old Chinese lunar calendar, the no longer use it but it worked in a very different way.

A sixty year cycle, that combined yin and yang, the 12 heavenly stems (the zodiac) and the 5 earthly branchā€™s: wind, water, wood, fire, earth, and metal.

I made myself a little booklet that looks like a lucky money envelope. The red envelopes that people exchange with money and wrote my name, and birthday in chinese as well as what my birth year and and what this year is. And the lucky colors and numbers for this year.
