Potions and Brews FAQ

Let’s learn about Pagan and Wiccan potion ingredients and recipes!

What do witches use to make potions?

Potions from ancient Rome and Greece included ingredients such as bats’ blood, crushed beetles, feathers, bird and animal claws, snake skeletons or skins, and many different herbs. Animal parts were often used because it was believed that by consuming part of an animal, you would gain their qualities.

Today, witches’ potions are made with kitchen ingredients that are known for their healing properties or folk Magic qualities, such as garlic for protection, cinnamon for purification, basil for prosperity, or roses for love, etc.

What were potions used for?

Potions were used for healing or treating illnesses, but also for their aphrodisiac effects, and even as poison (with the intent to cause harm or even kill). Love potions were usef for making someone fall in love with someone, and sleeping potions to cause long-term or eternal sleep.

What is a potion maker called?

A potion maker is called an apothecary. It means “person who prepares and sells drugs and other medicines”. Just like a pharmacist, this word entered English in the 14th century, derives from the Latin apothēca, “storehouse.” Witches and healers also made potions for different purposes.

What is the difference between a tincture and an elixir?

A tinctures is made using a base of alcohol, typically with herbs or plant extracts that then release their healing properties. The difference between a tincture and an elixir is that an elixir carries a sweetener, most of the time, honey. Both a tincture and an elixir seek to cure a disease or extend the person’s life.

What is a love potion?

A love potion is a liquid spell that can be given to drink or can be taken by oneself with the intent of making the person fall in love. Love potions directly influence the body of the loved one and this makes them very effective.

However, the use of love potions on a specific person is morally questionable. We cannot force someone to love us because the resulting outcome would be a coercive relationship, toxic by definition.
