STEP 1 : Making the Magical Season Magickal

This challenge is all about enhancing the holidays with magick- but how you choose to take on this theme is up to you!

Still not sure where to begin?

To help you get started, the following list has a few suggestions in which a witch might approach this challenge.

 Celebrate Some (or All!) of the 12 Themes of Yule

You may have heard of the 12 Days of Yule (the pagan origin of the 12 Days of Christmas), but did you know that some traditions celebrate each day of the 12 as its own holiday, complete with a theme of its own?

Some witches honor a different deity for each of the days, while other traditions celebrate a theme or virtue. Others spend each day reflecting on one of the 12 months, while yet others interpret the 12 Days in their own unique ways.

For this challenge, you might consider doing a spell or ritual that aligns with the theme/virtue/deity/etc of each day (or even just the days and themes that call to you!). Choose your own, check your tradition, or refer to these helpful lists to discover the correspondences of the 12 Days of Yule:

  • 12 Nights of Yule in some Norse Traditions:
  • 12 Nights of Yule as 12 Virtues:
  • 12 Nights of Yule as Reflections on the 12 Months of Year
  • December
  • February
  • March
  • April
  • May
  • June
  • July
  • August
  • September

:hugs: What Makes the Holidays Special

In her challenge theme suggestion, @Garnet posed the following question to the coven:

How do you celebrate Christmas (winter solstice) and why?

For your challenge entry, consider exploring this by reflecting on your own celebrations with some magickal journalling or meditation:

→ How did your celebrations develop: are they based in tradition, or of your own loving creation?
→ Do you involve magick or other religions/traditions/beliefs at all?
→ Who do you like to/wish you could spend this time with?
→ Why do you celebrate in the way you do- what makes your methods special to you?

Feel free to add a page to your Book of Mirrors and, if you are comfortable doing so, share your reflections with the coven!

Thank you for the extended deadline! With Christmas/Sixth Day of Yule on Sunday, the week is going to be hectic (and with a winter storm scheduled to hit on Thursday night/Friday morning, I imagine it is going to be even more hectic).

The extended deadline is much appreciated! :revolving_hearts:

And as always, your writing and little poems at the end of these challenges is as wonderful as ever!

Ooo… I love the extended challenge! I have a few things that I would like to do, so maybe I can add something as I finish them! A little love & light to my home, family, & friends over the next week or so! :hugs:

@MeganB I also love the little blessings at the ends of the challenges by @BryWisteria also  I was almost tempted to ask @Amethyst to help with a little chant too… she also has a great way with words for these types of things. As of late, my thinking of little poems or chants is actually quite lacking :flushed: I believe I am overthinking them, but it’s a theme of mine this time of year

Well, I have some thinking to do on the how, what, & when I will do for this challenge & be able to craft an entry for it :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I celebrate Yule, my husband celebrates Christmas. My house looks like it threw up Christmas. Its everywhere!!! I make homage to my dieties, and to the universe. I always leave a plate out for my fae. Gotta keep them happy. Ill have to get yall some pics of the insanity. And hubs actually calmed it down this yr. Due to lack of funds be didnt want to increase my light bill. So no outside stuff except my new wreath and a few lights. Also bc my kids are a-holes we have canceled Christmas celebrations. We will be seeing my husband’s brother for dinner. And thats it this year.

I am super excited about this challenge and the fact that it’s extended! I’ve been unable to participate with all of you since Thanksgiving, here in the states, and I have missed you! I’ll have to think carefully about working my spells amongst a house full of family, all of whom are unaware of my practice. To me that adds an element of elf-y-ness that seems extra appropriate. @Mistress_Of_Herbs I would love to see your pics of your and your husband’s decor. @BryWisteria, LOVE the poem! Really feeling this Yule challenge and can’t wait to see what we all do! :christmas_tree: :candy: :pentagram:

This is the first time i have ever celebrated Yule. Needless to say i had big plans but that thing called life got in the way so things didnt go how i wanted.

I created an altar around 10 days ago…i know a bit early but i was too eager and couldnt hold back. I create a log from last years Tree trunk. I dont know why i cut a piece off last year and kept it. I just had an urge. Maybe it was a sign that my path was going to change. I also created a wreath and garlands from cuttings in my garden.

This evening a made mulled wine to enjoy with my partner this evening…

I lit the candles of my yule log and a candle for the sun, placing it on its own pedestal. I asked my deities to join me. I do not yet have statues so have made little “cards” to represent them which show an image, colours, offerings and epiphets

I wanted to burn the log outside afterwards and then burn my list of things to remove from my life but the Scottish weather was not playing ball. Therefore i did this with a candle. I still did it outside under shelter of trees in my garden. I did take a video of this but it wouldnt let me upload.

I have left the candle burning outside as a small beacon of light during this long, dark night.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about my experiences today and i hope you have had a blessed Yule.

Challenge Entry

May I please submit an entry focusing on today’s summer solstice for me here in the merry old land of Aus. The credit for my entry goes to someone here in Perth that I have been I feel very blessed to have met and have begun working with and learning from; Kyle the Crystalline Mage.

From his recommendations I have now stated from today a new summer solstice tradition in putting out some of my crystals for a bit of jushing with Divine Masculine energy.

“For us in the Southern Hemisphere it’s the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year and a chance to celebrate the Divine Masculine in all aspects.

It is a time of giving, sharing, togetherness, abundance, making the most of the daylight hours and seeing our manifestations come to reality.

It is also the one power day of masculine/solar energy (this is compared to the 13 full moons that link to the feminine) and so it should be appreciate as such.

Celebrate the positive male influences in your life, male love ones in spirit and in life, the masculinity within yourself (regardless of gender) and the sun himself, who watches over us, gives us life and who without would not exist here on earth.

This is also the day to charge your solar/fire/masculine crystals, in the dawn sunlight is ideal but no longer than an hour is needed no matter the time of the day you are able.”

Credit to: Kyle the Crystalline Mage | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok | Linktree

On his Facebook page he has his recommendations for crystals and the winter solstice for my friends in the northern hemisphere.

I put out my Pyrite, Sunstone, Citrine, Ametrine, Carnelian, Golden Healer Quartz, Honey Calcite and Golden Tiger’s Eye babies for an hour this morning with the sunrise before I left for work. I had a bit of a chat to the photos that I have in a little altar for my dad and granddad this morning as I was getting ready for work. I thanked them for helping me and being with me in spirit and I invited their energies to join me today and be with us over Christmas as it will just be mum and I and the fur family for Christmas. They will be in my thoughts today and I took a piece of Sunstone and Tiger’s Eye with me to work today after they had their little solstice boost.

I don’t know how to quite explain it, but it really does look brighter and bluer here in Perth on this solstice morning.

This year I am celebrating Yule solo, though with encouragement from my husband. We are also hosting Christmas Eve for 15 people, so it will be a busy season. For Yule, I mainly have chosen to celebrate Mother’s Night, the Solstice, New Year’s Eve/Oath Night, and general cheer in between (setting out porridge for the Nisser, taking time with my permanent ancestor altar, creating a Yule altar, making ornaments and edible offerings to outdoor animals). On the Christmas side, we have a fresh tree decorated with love, and we will be exchanging presents with friends and family on the 24-26th, depending on when we see people. I have been busy crafting gifts this year. I love beads and copper wire, but I’ve also worked with yarn, paper, paint, and clay. These are some of the pendants I have made, some general pretty designs and others with more witchy/astrological/religious themes.

This ones got me a thinking because we are celebrating litha at tge mome t where i am but also christmas. I know yule and litha are direct opposing sabbats espevially wuth tie to holly and oak kings and the change from light to datk and darl to light. Ive looked at some stuff posted about Litha and ways to celebrate trying to figure out how to do a 13 day celebration based on litha while still recognise chtistmas lol. With 3hrs sleep this morning my brains hurting after a long day but im deteenined to figure sonething out. my jobs taken over my life alot so last night after two days of near tears and overwhelmed i decided i needed to pull back and find better balance and i guess maybe that is fitting as the equinox on either end of winter and summer is almost like the tipping point abd where nature balances out the dark and light. I started taking serious plans for meditation and better self care so tjats a big focus at the moment since my revelation last night that i needed to make a change. Sun magick is listed as a big thing around litha and with the sun hope. And even though its hit the sun point before heading into dark, i actually like the cooler seasons oddly enough, i overheat even in winter so these hot days im struggling esp for sleep… but i still like the use of sun energy and fire energy even if the extreme hot days are not what cope well with. Divination and meditations… and im thinking i want and need to reconnect to my clan even if some may nkt necessarily have a time of year in particular connevted to or that may have another time of the year they are associayed to. I want to try find a way to honor and spend time witg each during this period. Just to reconnect and find my centre and balance. Crystals another thing and herbal teas, maybe using the daily energy in relation to the litha correspomfances. But putting it into 13 day series of rituals or celebratiins will take sone working out lol and pen abd paper lol when i get home and get cleaned up and sone food i tgink i might sit down and make notrs and see what i can come up with. Right now its just a jumble of ideas lol too many to even write all down lol

Wow! That’s lots of decor. The collections are awesome. He must buy something each year.

I am curious about the raiders sign. Does it point them to the exit or the beer fridge or…?

Thank you @BryWisteria for the extra time on this challenge!

I have to spend today preparing for the winter storm. The first thing I have to do is take down the fence to my outside sacred space. We are supposed to have 40 mile per hour wind gusts and I don’t think my fence will hold up. I also have to do some kind of shelter for my feral cats. The windchill is supposed to be in the negative numbers and we are not use to that in Texas!

@Phoenix_Rose yes i get him a new nutcracker each yr we have been together, however when his dad died he acquired his collection aswell. As for the raiders sign, currently its pointing at our tree. Lol. He moves it around.

@Trixie_Thojrne my alter currently has fresh holly on it from my holly bush. I try to leave his christmas stuff alone as much as possible. He does have my crystals mixed in his stuff tho, as they are scattered around the house for protection, and he doesnt mess with that. As he KNOWS and has seen it work

@Kasandra The storm certainly adds an extra dash of craziness to an already hectic time of year- I hope it doesn’t hit your area hard, Kasandra- may you be safe and well!:heart:

@MeganB Awwww, thank you Megan! I’m really happy if you like them! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@Susurrus You’re very kind, thank you- but my wee little chants come nowhere close to the masterpieces @Amethyst creates, she really does have a mastery of words and rhymes! Good luck and have fun with whatever you choose to work on this week! :sparkles:

@Mistress_Of_Herbs What a very merry combination of celebrations- it looks like your home is a fun and bright place to spend the holidays! Any lights outside are just a little bonus- the most important lights are within, and I can tell you keep a very warm and loving home, Christeena. Wishing you and your hubby blessed holidays! :grinning:

@Trixie_Thojrne Welcome back, RedJoy! It sounds like you have been very busy- with all the fun and elf-y-ness (I love that!) of magick at the holidays. Thank you so much, and looking forward to seeing/hearing about your seasonal spellwork- blessed holidays! :two_hearts:

@Cosmic_Curiosity Congrats on your first Yule- that is so exciting! While I’m sorry that things didn’t turn out exactly as you had hoped, it looks like you had a really beautiful and meaningful celebration. Thank you for sharing the pictures- everything is so beautiful! I especially love your greenery decorations- the cinnamon and citrus are such pretty additions to the deep green! :evergreen_tree: :sparkles: Beautiful work and thanks for sharing- wishing you a very blessed Yule too!:blush:

@jessica72 It sounds like your crystal studies have been going wonderfully, Jessica- I’m so happy you’re enjoying them and having such fun with your treasures! :gem: The pictures are beautiful- it looks like you had perfect weather for the summer solstice :sun_with_face: Wishing you a happy, bright, and blessed Litha! :sunflower: :grinning:

@charlotte2 Wow, Charlotte- you are so talented! Look at all those beautiful creations! Wire wrapping is tough, but it looks like you’ve mastered it. The copper swirl on the right is perfectly balanced! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely crafts- wishing you and your husband a very happy and blessed Yule and Christmas! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@Phoenix_Fire Despite being tired, you came up with some great ideas and thoughts about holiday celebrations and themes, Phoenix- you’re right! Litha and Yule (and all the Sabbats) are celebrations of the sun and light. Solar magick, light magick, spellwork about hope and happiness- those are all great sources of inspiration :sun_with_face: I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll choose to do- I hope you managed to get some good sleep!:two_hearts:

@Ostara Yikes- those are some strong winds! Sounds like a smart idea to tuck away the fence until the winds calm down. I’m sure your kitty friends appreciate the shelter too- hopefully things won’t get too cold or rough! Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. May you stay warm and safe!:heart:

125 Weekly Witchy Challenge – 13 days of Holiday Celebrations

Challenge entry – Garnet 12/21/22

Holidays around the world.

In this challenge, I could discuss just Christian/Judao traditions.

But I thought those aren’t the only groups who celebrated Winter Holidays.

In India, Bodhi is a Buddhist holiday that commerates the day Buddha found Nervana (enlightenment)(596 BCE).

On December 8th, this holiday is celebrated in other Buddhist countries (China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam) FYI – in Japan the Zen Buddhists call it Rohastu and in China, it is called Laba. Buddhism is a very gentle religion leading believers toward, essentially perfection. This is done with meditation, learning, and kindness.

Diwali - the “Festival of Lights” - celebrated in India, again, is held for a 5-day period in mid-October and mid-December. The purpose of the “World’s largest festival” is to celebrate the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

I’ve seen films about the Diwali festival and it’s an amazing celebration. Music, noise, and lights. The people wear their best brightly colored clothing and decorate lamps, call diyas. They dress up their elephants with colorful tapestries and brightly detailed images on the animal’s skin.

Sparklers are given to the children and after dark, they twirl around making amazing patterns of light. It was a great party.

Three Kings’ Day is known as an Epiphany Christianity. It celebrates the visit of the Magi who were guided by a star to visit the Christ-child with gifts of gold, frankincense, and Myrrh. AKA the gift of the Magi. It marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas.

Hanukkah is a Jewish festival that’s observed for 8 days and nights, based on the Hebrew calendar. I don’t know a lot about Hebrew holidays, but legend has it was a rededication of a sacred temple, that only had enough oil to burn candles for one day, but it burned for 8 days and nights.

Kwanzaa is an annual festival that Celebrates African-American culture. It takes place from Dec. 26- Jan.1st.
Although a reasonably new holiday, it is celebrated by teaching young children every night about another of the 7 principles. These principles include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. These principles would be a good guideline for all peoples and cultures of the world.

Lunar New Year AKA Chinese New Year. It celebrates the traditional Chines calendar. They have amazing snake-like dragons dancing in the streets, fireworks, and generally great fun.

And last but not least,

Winter Solstice – it is the shortest day of the year and the longest night. Historically it has been celebrated as the rebirth of the Sun. Crafts associated with Winter Solstice are the yule log, the yule tree, and handmade wreaths.

Just for fun

As a child, our mother was as much a child, as we were. All of us used construction paper to cut out bright red bells, and white snowflakes, yellow stars, and miles, and miles of paper chains. It wasn’t a formal Christmas tree, in fact, it was a mess, but we loved every decoration, every tinsel that my oldest brother meticulously put on the tree one at a time. Every layer of the chain was carefully repaired or replaced (often)because we had cats…enough said?

Family gatherings? Sliding with a toboggan down a hill, just to drag it back up the hill and start again. (BTW I was the one in the back and
never made it over 20’ before I went flying.) I often wondered why Mom padded me like a snowman, and now I know why.

My brothers made me go down the hill on foot and drag the toboggan back up the hill with them. I was always the coldest, wettest, and most tired of the 3 of us by the time we got home and I promise, I slept through Santa’s coming and going.

Bless you all and Happy Holidays

Garnet

It sounds like you’re very busy at the moment. I wouldn’t worry about figuring out 13 days of mixing Litha and Christmas, it might just add stress instead of helping you to find your center and balance. I’m glad that you’re headed into a more comfortable time of year for yourself (weather wise at least). Perhaps you could try to spend 5 minutes a day just enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and enjoying the change of the seasons and reflecting on blessings you have had this year? Personally I chose a few nights during this holiday time that resonate with me to have specific rituals, but other than that I am trying to just take time to breathe and reflect. Whatever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful holiday.
