My Spellwriting Process ✨

Since our challenge this week is all about writing spells, I wanted to share some tips from my process. I have always preferred to write my own spells. Spells that I find online have served as inspiration before, and I still remember some chants from when I was a young teen reading whatever book I could get my hands on, but writing spells for myself makes my magick more personal for me.

I couldn’t tell you where these chants are from now because…well, I remember walking home from school and chanting the spell for warmth when I was cold.

Bound and binding, binding bound,
What was lost must now be found.

I am warm,
Warm as fire,
All the warmth,
Is my desire.

My Process

:sparkles: I like to think about my goal, first. If I don’t have a clear goal, then I can’t write an effective spell. If I don’t know what I want, how can I possibly create a plan to get it? :woman_shrugging:

:sparkles: Once I’ve got my goal, I usually write it in the form of an affirmation or a statement. For example, " I lead a healthy and fulfilled life. My body and mind are healthy and I am happy." This is always written in the present tense. I believe that time is not linear and saying things like will have or want to have limit your magick because magick doesn’t always play by our rules of time.

:sparkles: If you’re Wiccan and you follow the Wiccan Rede, you will also want to take into account how your spell will work. Is your spell meant to harm someone else? Is it meant to gain leverage against another person?

These three words the rede fulfill:
An it harm none, do what ye will.

After the goal and statement, I then need to figure out how I’m going to cast the spell. Am I going to use fire? Water? Earth? Air?

For me, these elements all play a different role in how the magick works.

:fire: Fire for quick spells, Earth for long-lasting spells, Air for fleeting magick to work when it needs to, and water for magick to flow where it’s needed. Sometimes I’ll use a combination. Sometimes it doesn’t matter. Sometimes Fire is used as a messenger to send my wishes to the Gods and sometimes it’s used to burn away what doesn’t serve me.

:herb: Then I’ll gather my ingredients. Each ingredient that I use has a specific purpose in my spellwork. I’ll often combine ingredients that all have similar correspondences for me to sort of cover all my bases. This is what I did for my Blue Moon Magick spell. I will be using several different herbs that all correspond to different elements of health and wellness. When they’re combined, I believe they work more efficiently.

:memo: If I’m planning a spell out, I’ll often write the invocation beforehand. This part of the spell is different for everyone. If you’re Wiccan, most people will say that your spell needs to rhyme. You may also consider adding in some words like, “An it harm none, so mote it be,” as most Wiccan spells do. This can make sure that your energy and your workings don’t do unnecessary harm to other people while it works.

To bind the spell well every time,
Let the spell be spoke in rhyme.

For myself, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes it helps me to remember what I want to say, but other times I speak directly from the heart  . This can help me connect with my emotions and tap into the energy within myself. At this point, I just do the spell! Sometimes the hardest part of casting a spell is actually doing it.

Things to Consider

Many people work with different correspondences using the celestial bodies of the universe. You may want to consider timing your spell during a specific phase of the moon or sun, or when an astrological sign is in a specific house or moon phase. These correspondences can be tradition-based, meaning your specific tradition of Wicca or witchcraft has its own meanings. Or they can be personal to you and how you feel.

:crescent_moon: Moon Magick - Different phases of the moon correspond with different intentions and energy for spells. We know the phases of the moon. We’re witches. We love the moon (most times). You can read more about using moon phases in magick here and here.

:sun_with_face: Sun Magick - Just like with the moon, the different phases of the sun can add different meaning and energy to your spells if you choose to work with them. A lot of people don’t think about how the sun moves in phases, too, but it does. The difference between the sun phases and the moon phases is that the sun phases happen daily. These include sunrise, mid-morning, afternoon, evening, dusk, and sunset. You can read more about working with the sun in magick here.

:cherry_blossom: Days of the Week - Each day of the week can correspond with different deities and magickal work. I don’t work too much with the days of the week, but for some reason I associate Tuesday with love and Friday with new beginnings. I’m not sure if that corresponds to traditional meanings, but you can learn more about the correspondences of the days of the week here.

:art: Colors - We know how colors make us feel, and color can be a powerful tool when casting your spells. Many traditions hold the same correspondences for colors. For myself, I tend to go with what feels right. Colors are personal for me, and I base the colors I use on the emotion it evokes within me. You can learn more about color correspondences here and here.

:star: Astrology - I don’t know much about working with astrology, but when the signs move through the universe, they correspond with different energies and ideas. It may be worth looking into if you are interested in astrology. You can learn more about working with astrology here.

I hope this helps those of you that have never written a spell before. For those of you that have, I hope it either gives you inspiration or a new perspective on spellwriting!

Go forth and enjoy the challenge!

This is a gorgeous guide, @MeganB! :two_hearts: I know several people were hesitant about where to begin making their own spell- this is a very helpful and soothing introduction to crafting spells. Thank you so much for sharing!

That was the inspiration behind it  I know writing that first spell can be a daunting task and a lot of people don’t want to mess it up. This is just my process and, since I’ve been doing it for a bit I figured I’d share it :hugs:

You’re welcome! :sparkler:

That’s great Megan I appreciate a lot what you are sharing with us! I also have a chronic disease and mental disorder that I’m not comfortable to mention here. Witchcraft is my medicine for sure :dizzy: and that’s why I’m alive! I like to cast my own spells but I don’t write them. I should start organizing myself because I’m studying high magick and there are many characters for angels and demons invocation and also the alchemical symbols are important to write them all on a Grimoire and @Francisco is helping me a lot with this! Spells8 is my spiritual family that each day I discover different things :black_heart:

You’re very welcome :hugs:

I wish you much health and wellness going forward :dizzy: I know the struggles of both mental health and physical health, and my faith and magickal practice are important parts of my life that help me navigate when times are tough

Thank you so much for your wisdom! I wish Fernando would give us a printable of this. But, I will take notes.

You’re very welcome! If you’re on the computer, you can actually print it just like it is. If you select all the text you want, right-click and print selection, it should print just the post. Maybe @Francisco can turn it into a printable if he wants to, but I know my spellwriting is a probably a little different than most Wiccan traditions because, well, I’m not Wiccan

I don’t know if Fernando is available but maybe I can do it!

@MeganB Here is my first attempt at writing a spell. I also posted it in the weekly challenge about Candle Magic. What do you think?

SPELL: To Transform hate to love

As the fifth day of the week, Thursday is considered a good day for magic rites

Hamsa serves as a connection to the energy of protection from God - Some equate it with the hand of the Goddess, Mary, or Fatima. It wards off the evil eye or negative energy.

According to the Energy Muse

“left side of your body is your most sensitive side and deals with your internal self. It receives energy from outside your body and helps you make positive “shifts” that best benefit you internally.

In contrast, your right side is your “doer” or “action” side. When you wear gems on your right wrist, the gemstones aid in your productivity and control the energy you put into your outside environment. Your right side is more about how you take action in the world outside.

I envision using the Hamsa as protection while converting incoming dark energy to light energy and the new light energy is released back out into the world. Effectively blocking the negative energy so it does no harm but then diminishing its effects by converting it to light energy

On Thursday - (at 5:00 if you can manage it)

Gather together-

A Hamsa- this can be anything that can be carried easily in a pocket or if it is a charm that can be added to a bracelet and worn on the left wrist. even a slip of paper with a hamsa drawn on it Place it on the table in front of you.

A bell

1 black candle on the left - to absorb negative energy

1 white candle on the right-to bring clarity and clean energy directing it outward.

Matches

Dress candles as you see fit with oil

On the white candle write all positive energy emotions - ie love, joy, blessings, happiness, etc.

Do not cast your circle or call your watch towers since we want the energy to flow freely.

Speak:

I ask all saints and Gods protect

The action of our spell elect

Your blessings on these motions prove

A source joy and you approve

I light the candles black and white

One way path from dark to light

Let the energies easy flow

From left to right

I wish it so

I ring the bell to call it here

When hatred lurks and causes fear

I bid it find no home to stay but

Change to love and go on its way.

Moving through the flames of change

Your hurtfull nature now a strange

And with your energy anew

I bid you spread only love in lieu.

This spell is cast to set love free

So as it’s spoken let it be

Thanks to the powers that came by

I bid you go - or stay nigh

-Carry the Hamsa for three days after the spell is cast

This is a beautifully written spell Berta! It looks like you have everything together here and correlate it to many different correspondences. For your first spell, it is very intricate. I want to let you know, though, that it doesn’t have to be this complicated  If you want to use all of these correspondences (days of the week, time of the day, etc.) you can, but it really isn’t necessary.

As a side note, I might add in what exactly you mean by “evil” or “negative” because, at least for me, energy is entirely neutral. It is the intention behind the energy that is either good or bad, but those ideals are also subjective to each person. What you find bad might not be bad to someone else, for example.

Overall, great job!

I feel that there is a lot of hatred floating around and that makes people make poor choices. This has been a tense few days… especially where politics is concerned. I see your point about energy being neutral and I believe that is what I am banking on with this intention - that energy can be projected for productive or constructive purpose vs harmful or destructive purpose. I do understand that there are times when it might be a good thing to destroy something or a bad time to encourage something… My goal here is to perhaps bend the existing energy so that it is kinder, gentler and uplifting.
Should I have made that more clear in the ritual? Like I said… first effort so I am really open to suggestion. @MeganB I changed it… hope that is an improvement.

I think that as long as you are clear on your intention for yourself, then the wording really doesn’t matter. I only brought it up so you know to keep that in mind for yourself :hugs:
