Introduction

You have probably been a part of many candle rituals by now. Have you ever made a wish before blowing the candles on your birthday cake? Ancient Greeks started the tradition¹ of decorating cakes with lit candles in honor of the Goddess Artemis. A round pie was meant to symbolize the moon, and the candles were the light radiating from it. This act was a sacred one, and still remains to be. Every year we gather with our friends and family to evoke Magic, strength and hope.

Since their earliest origins, candles have been used for ceremonial and religious practices that go from prayer to healing and transformation. The spiritual significance of the candle flame is well known.

Candles are used by almost every Witch, no matter what their belief system or Magical tradition (Wiccan, Hoodoo, Yoruba, or any other). While not everyone likes candles, you will soon realize why their use is so widely spread. Candles symbolize light and the Spirit being brought to life through the Element Fire, burning in the hearth, a symbol of home.

Candle Spells and Magic

Candle Magic 101

1. Setting a Goal

Before lighting a candle or casting any candle spells, you should be aware of the reasons why you will be doing this ritual. That is, establish an intention for your spellwork. Candle Magic can be used as a way to protect yourself and others, as an aid to achieve a desired goal, to help with your meditation or simply to ask for guidance in your daily life.

If you are petitioning for something, the candle alone is not going to do the work. Everything depends on what you ask for and how you do it.

Just arrived? Read this Lesson to get started: How to Cast Spells When You’re New and Unsure

Clearly define whether this magical work is intended for yourself or for another person. If you are casting a spell for someone else, it is essential to first get their permission. Otherwise, you might be working against their free will, breaking one of the most basic Rules Every Witch Should Know.

2. Choosing a Candle

Types of candles for spells
Types of candles for spellcasting

Choose the candle that best fits your need depending on the wish or the intention of your spell. Because colors have powerful effects on behavior, each color has a symbolism attached to it. There’s a Complete Candle Color Guide below. If you don’t have a candle of a certain color, you can always use a white one.

You can use taper candles, table candles and even tealight candles for your spells. Keep in mind that the size of the candle will affect the duration of your ritual.

Although some people use square-shaped, pyramidal or engraved candles, I can assure you that regular candles are as effective as any other type of candle, regardless of their manufacturing or external appearance.

Candles, however, need to be charged with a specific intention. For this, you can carve your petition/goal on it, or you can anoint the candle so it will embody your intention. See step 4 (Dressing your candle).

3. Preparing your Altar

You will need a place to practice your Candle Magic. It could be any room in your home where you can be alone and carry out all your spells without interruptions. Find a private and quiet place and set up your altar. This will be your sacred space.

4. Dressing your Candle

Dressing your Candle

Candles can be purified and consecrated before their use in a ritual for any Magical purpose. By anointing the candles we are charging them with our intentions and willpower. This is also done to eliminate all residual energies from any person who handled the candles before you bought them.

Do I always have to dress my candles before a spell? No. This is a personal decision and a way to add intent and power to your spell. If you don’t have any oils to dress your candle, you can cast the spell without doing this step, or simply state your intention while holding the candle.

How to dress a candle

  1. Choose a suitable oil. This will depend on what kind of ritual you are going to do and what your intentions are.
  2. Hold the candle with one hand and wet your other hand’s index and middle fingers with the oil.
  3. Rub the oil all over the candle without touching the wick. You can start from the bottom and work your way up or start from the top and go down. Note: There are as many opinions on this matter as there are Witches on earth. A common practice is to rub your fingers from the top down to attract something, or to rub them from the bottom up to banish or repel something.
  4. As you are rubbing the oil, visualize your wish and how it’s going to manifest. Spend a minute or two focusing on this.

5. Cast your Spell

You are now ready to add any ritual acts that will be part of your spell. What follows are just a few examples of spells with candles you can cast at home. Candle Spells FAQ

Frequently asked questions easy spells

Can I blow out the candles?

Blowing out a candle symbolizes the end of the ritual or spell. If you are not going to light the candle again, then you can blow out the candle and terminate your ritual. However, if the ritual is going to continue the next day or at another time, it is better to extinguish the candle with a wet finger or use a candle snuffer symbolizing that even though the candle is out, the ritual is still going on.

If you have blown out a candle when you shouldn’t have, don’t worry. This is not so important, it’s mostly superstition. If you really believe that blowing out the candle will cancel your spell, then probably your mind and intentions are not fully aligned. There should be no trace of doubt that your spell will work in your mind.

Whether-you-think-you-can-youre-right

How long do you leave the candles burning?

There are spells that clearly indicate to let the candle extinguish itself. This could be an issue for many Witches since it can take up to 2 hours for a candle to burn all the way and because it’s not safe to leave candles burning without supervision. Do not leave the room if the candle is still lit!

Instead, you have a few options:

  1. Plan ahead. Find smaller candles and take the necessary time to let the candle burn all the way. Use this time for meditation, self-improvement and as a small sacrifice or a time-out from other things in your life.
  2. Modify your rituals and spells so they are shorter. Instead of waiting for the candle to burn all the way, finish your ritual when you feel confident to do so (for instance, clap your hands or ring a bell to indicate sending the energies on its way), then blow out the candle, cut off the parts that you used or carved, and throw it away or bury it.
  3. If you are a beginner, start with tealight candles, which are a lot smaller and burn faster. They will make your first spells feel easier and quicker.

Don’t be afraid to experiment. It might take a while, but eventually you will find the best candles that fit your purposes and you will learn how to carve them to make them burn faster.

Can I reuse the candles in my spells?

As mentioned before, some spells require you to light the same candles over the course of several days. If that’s the case, you should certainly reuse them. For one-time spells, if the candle is a central part of the spell, do not use that candle again because it’s now charged with the intention of that specific spell and re-using it may override and cancel the effect.

If you are using candles for a routine meditation or a simple cleanse without any directed intentions, then you can definitely re-use that candle the next time.

How to dispose of candles after a spell?

According to your tradition, you will either bury the leftovers on soil, such as in your backyard, a churchyard, or you can throw them in your compost. Many people prefer to keep it simple and throw the remains in the trash since they will go to a landfill and be buried anyway. When doing this, remember that it’s still part of the ritual and a sacred act, so you could say a prayer as you do it, or just give thanks to the Elements for their help.

If you were casting a banishing spell or any kind of work to get rid of something, it’s a good idea to take the materials you used somewhere outside your home, such as a churchyard or a crossroad and bury them there. Some traditions and rituals require to dispose of the remains of a spell in a running body of water. You can so this by going to a stream, river or the sea. Make sure you are using biodegradable materials before doing this.

  2. how many times do i have to do the candle ritual? should i do it once a week until the spell works?

    • Francisco Huanaco

      Hi Bella!

Once you have cast a spell, there’s no need to re-cast it again because the results will appear when it’s time. Remember: the harder the goal, the longer it will take.

If you find yourself thinking too much about it, burn a candle as you meditate and focus some energy toward visualizing your goal happening. This is a way of re-stating the intent and it can help you, but it’s not necessary.

      Good luck!

  3. Hello. I recently casted a spell. And the direction ss mention to light the incense in the beginning. . when spell is over do I let the incense burn all the way until the candle burns out or blow it out as well. Thank u

    • Francisco Huanaco

Hi Taylor! Yes, let the incense burn all the way. Most incense sticks will burn for 20 to 30 minutes. Candles may take longer so if you need to leave the room blow it out and close your ritual, or continue burning it on a different day while you meditate.

      Good luck!

  4. Tomekia Benson

Hello, I did a spiritual cleansing last night and I promise you I feel so different to the point where its hard to explain. My mind is more clear and free from clutter. I was reading that if it is your first time casting a spell you need to cleanse yourself. Do I have to do another cleansing again in order to do my spell tonight? please let me know. Thanks Ahead

  5. Hi i have a question, can you make your own candles??

Somehow i don’t like the candles they sell by that i mean the colors i love bright intense colors.

  6. Hello,

Thank you so much for your content, it has been so much helping for a baby witch like me.
I have cast a banishing spell on the last full moon. I have seen incredible results from the next days. But here you said that what should get rid of the things we used. I burned my paper in a Calderon and threw the rest in the wind. But I have still my black candle at home, it’s a big one. Should I throw it away or can I keep it for another spell and clean it.
    Thank you

    • Francisco Huanaco

      Hi Marina,

If you already saw good results, you can get rid of the candle. Say “Thanks for helping me in my goals” and throw it in the trash or compost. Its job is done and now you can let it go along with the things you successfully banished.

      Blessed Be!
